For Sale is a Monumental Art Glass Vase made by Loetz Klostermuehle of Bohemia which is now the modern day Czech Republic. The Pattern is called "Papillon" and the form is a Flower Bud Vase. The Vase is of Monumental size as it stands an impressive 18 1/8" tall and the bulbous bottom has a diameter of 7 3/4". The top of the Vase has a diameter of 5 1/2".
The Vase has an outstanding Gold Papillon (Oil Spot) Decoration on a Green glass base color. This gives the Vase the illusion of being Blue but the base color of the glass is green. The elongated mottles are tightly packed next to each other in a vertical fashion. This mottling is much more defined like molecules are in real life. They become elongated and stretched as they climb the long stem. The iridescence is just outstanding as you can see vivid colors of Blues, Purples and some Fuchsia. The vase displays a large bulbous Trumpet shape with a wonderful ruffled top lip that looks like a flower when looking straight down. In my eyes I think the vase resembles a Daffodil Flower and I would somewhat consider this a very large Floriform or Flower Form Vase.
The Vase is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, chips or dings. The opening at the top has a nice fire polished irregular border. The bottom has a counter sunk polished pontil. This is the mark of a quality piece of Art Glass. The Vase is unsigned as is typical of many Loetz vases. It more than likely had a paper label at one time. There is no doubt that this is Loetz! This decorated pattern and technique is a trademark of the Loetz glass Factory. The vase is very clean outside and in and it shows minimal signs of use.
This is the Largest and most impressive Papillon Decor Vase I have ever owned. The decoration is brilliant and well defined. The applied iridescent finish is a good as L.C.T. Tiffany Favrile and Steuben's Aurene glass. I'm sure the buyer will be quite pleased with their purchase. This vase was made circa 1899-1905 and is considered the early years for Loetz.
