For Sale is a wonderful piece of art pottery made by The Grueby Pottery Company of Boston, Mass. The item is called a "Low or Bulb Bowl" and it is done in their desirable thick matte curdled green glaze. The bowl has some size as it stands 1 5/8" tall and 9 3/8" in diameter.
The Bowl has a nice low profile. It has a very organic feel to it and it displays a very beautiful deep rich Leathery Matte Green Glaze. This is further accented with curdling in the Glaze. This is one of the Matt green Glazes that made Grueby Pottery famous and their pieces highly sought after by the Arts & Crafts collectors. This piece is hand thrown and you can see the horizontal indented rows on the exterior created by the Potters fingers. The inside has a glossy interior that has a celery green to dark green color and swirl pattern.
The Bowl is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, chips or dings. There is some wear to the glossy interior as you can see several scratches. This is typical and commensurate with its age. The Bowl is signed with Grueby's impressed circular signature mark which reads, "Grueby Pottery Boston USA" with the Flower emblem impressed in the middle. This is somewhat obscured by the glaze on the bottom but you can clearly see its the circular mark. There is also a square made in the green glaze. Great identifying mark if this was ever stolen.
This is a very desirable shape and I'm sure the buyer will be quite pleased with it. Grueby Pottery has long been a favorite amongst the Arts & Crafts Pottery Collectors. Their Pottery has proven to be a sound investment even in the toughest of times. This is a nice example in very good condition and it will look just Great on that Stickley, Mission, Arts and Crafts Style Cabinet, bookcase or Table.
Living just north of Boston has given me the opportunity to find some of the most unique matte green Grueby and Hampshire Pottery through the years. This piece is considered to be an early piece from Grueby Pottery and was made Circa 1899-1903.
