For sale is a wonderful arts and crafts shaped vessel made by The Grueby Pottery Company of Boston, Ma. The vase is called "Carved Leaves & Buds" and it is done in a wonderful combination of a Grueby's matte green and yellow glazes. The vase is a large size as it stands 11 5/8" tall and is 6 1/4" in diameter at the shoulder. The foot has a diameter of 3 1/4".
This vase display an arts and crafts shoulder form with a small raised lip to receive flowers. It is also a Rare 2 color form as well. This pot accentuates the vertical tooled leaves. The vase has an outstanding frothy and feathered matte green and matte yellow glaze. This matte green glaze is pretty uniform on the lower 2/3rds of the vase with the upper 1/3 having more of a solid matte green. This background matte green glaze is Grueby Pottery at its best. The vertically carved leaves are tooled very carefully with the high spots along the upper leaf edges. It is further accented with stylized buds rising up from a stem between these tooled leaves at the top. This introduces a 2nd glaze consisting of a matte yellow. These buds appear to be growing from in between the carved leaves. The introduction of this 2nd glaze really gives this vase that life like or realistic appeal.
The vase is considered to be in very good to excellent condition as there are no cracks, or major chips. There are 2 glaze pockets on the flat part of the top and these are pictured. This was made this way and not damage. I was also told that there was professional restoration to the bottom edge and at the top lip. I cannot see where this was done as the restoration is that good. The vase is signed with the circular impressed mark which reads "GRUEBY POTTERY BOSTON USA" along with the incised artist initials "RE" for the Modeler "Ruth Erickson". The circular mark is somewhat obscured by the bottom and is a little hard to see. There is also some numbers on the bottom and I can make out a 1 and an 8 or a 9 and I believe there is a 3rd number but I can see it. This is more than likely a shape number.
This is wonderful piece of Art Pottery is done in a beautiful Grueby 2 colored glaze with nicely carved and tooled broad vertical leaves in a great shape.
