For sale is a very nice pen tray made by Tiffany Studios of New York, New York. The pen tray is done in the "Abalone" pattern in Tiffany Studios fancy goods line. The patina on the metal is the very popular real gold patina. The pen tray measures 8 3/4" wide, 2 5/8" deep and stands 3/4" tall.

This pen tray displays an arts and crafts pattern of layered squares on each end. The center shows these same layered squares but there is added grape leaf shapes with inlaid abalone discs serving as the grapes . It has 3 pen or pencil holders crossing the inside of the pattern. You can use up to 3 pens comfortably and could probably fit 6 inside the holders. This pen tray sits on 4 bun style feet. This is a rather hard to find desk set item without major gold patina loss. The patina is very nice on this one!

The pen tray is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, or dings to any of the metal. The piece still retains all of its original Abalone discs. The pen tray sits nice and even and shows minor patina loss. The pen tray is properly signed on the bottom with the "Tiffany Studios New York" impressed mark along with the pattern number "1159" impressed just under it.

Tiffany started using a 3 digit numbering system after 1902. Since this has a 4 digit number this pen/pencil holder was made circa 1905-1920. Those of you who are looking for an excellent example of this pen holder in the Abalone pattern with gold patina will be delighted with their purchase.
