For sale is a beautiful piece of art pottery made by The Roseville Pottery Company of Zanesville, Ohio. The pattern is called "Magnolia" and it is in the ever popular green background glaze. The piece is rather large as it is a cookie jar and stands 10 1/4" tall and is 8 1/2" in diameter at its widest point which is the handles outside measurement. The top opening is 5 1/8" outside diameter and 4 3/4" inside diameter. The vessel measures 8 3/16" without the lid.

The cookie jar is a nice form and has a bulging belly to accommodate the largest batch of homemade cookies. It is accented with triangular buttress style handles on each side of the upper portion of the vessel. The cookie jar has a very pleasing blue/green textured background glaze. This seems to resemble bark from a tree. It is further embossed with large off white and salmon pink Magnolia flowers. The pattern is different on the opposite side as it displays There are 3 flowers one one side and 2 on the other. There are some light brown tones of terracotta up high behind the raised embossed life like branches. These flowers on both sides appear to be flowering from wavy black branches coming from the bottom. The domed lid also has a tree bark textured appearance as well finished by a simple formed squat knob.

The piece is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, chips or dings. The piece is signed on the bottom in raised relief "Roseville U.S.A." and the mold number "2-8" also in raised relief. The cookie jar bottom has a large letter "R" written in a blue grease pencil or glaze along with another illegible letter. This was more than likely the finisher's mark. The lid also has the initials WCW underlined in grease pencil. and a nice deep lip to keep the lid in place.

This piece was made in 1943 during World War II. Those of you who collect this pattern and want a nice example need to look no further. This is an excellent example in both form and Glaze combinations. This piece books for $400-$600.
