Grueby

$1,695.00

For sale is a wonderful piece of art pottery made by The Grueby Pottery Company of Boston, Mass. I have a "Tapered Swollen" form vase that is done in Grueby's unique ochre background glaze. The vase stands 5 3/8" tall and is 4 3/4" in diameter at the shoulder. The top opening is 2 7/8" in diameter inside measurements.

The planter depicts a wonderful tapered swollen form with a small raised and slightly flaring top lip. The glaze has a leathery matte ochre alligator crackled glaze that is just superb. The crackly finish resemble a dried up creek bed where water once flowed. The glaze is quite different from the normal matte green glazes you are accustomed to seeing. The glaze on this vessel is highly sought after and a very pleasing and unique colored glaze from Grueby Pottery. There are dimple marks in the neck of the vessel. These seem to be symmetrical and was purposely done this way.

The vase is considered to be in very good to excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, or chips. There are lots of teeny tiny smaller than pin holes in the glaze. This is all over the vase and is common with this glaze. These are very tiny and can only be seen upon close inspection at an angle. The piece is signed with the impressed Grueby leaf logo along with "Grueby Pottery Boston U.S.A." circular mark. This is somewhat obscured by the off white waterproofing glaze on the underside bottom.

There are a hardly any examples of this glaze on this vase that is documented in past sales with the auction houses. Of all the art pottery manufacturers of the day, not one single art pottery company had any stronger influence on the Arts and Crafts pottery movement than Grueby. Their pottery has always proven a worthy investment as pieces like this do nothing but rise in value year after year. I would say this piece of art pottery was made circa 1906-1908 based on its marks.

This piece would look outstanding on that Stickley, mission, arts and crafts style bookcase. I'm sure the buyer will be extremely happy with their purchase.
