For sale is a very nice desk item made by Tiffany Studios, New York. The item is called a "Pen Wipe" and it is done in the "Pine Needle" desk set pattern. The pen wipe is in Tiffany's most desirable with green/brown/red patina. The pen wipe stands 2 1/4" tall and is 2 1/4" in diameter at the top lip. and the bottom has a diameter of 1 5/8".
The pen wipe displays a wonderful acid etched pattern of pine needles over a bronze body in a corseted shape. The Verdi green/brown/red patina is just outstanding. This pen wipe has the best patina on a Pine Needle pen wipe that I have ever sold. The detail in the acid etching and the patina make this a wonderful additional to the pine needle desk set line of fancy goods from Tiffany Studios. It has a replica pen brush just like the real one inside.
This pen wipe is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, chip or dings to any of the metal. The pen brush itself is in excellent condition as well. There are no excuses to be made for this piece what so ever. It appears that this piece saw minimal use as there is usually damage or major ink stains to this little gem. The pen wipe is signed on the underside bottom with the "Tiffany Stvdios New York" impressed mark. This mark with the "v" in Studios denotes this as an early piece.
Those of you who collect the Pine Needle desk set pattern and want a museum quality pen wipe in their collection, look no further. They just don't get any better than this one. It is in excellent condition, has a crisp mold and great patina w brush inside.
Tiffany started numbering his desk set pieces usually with a 3 digit number after 1902. Since this piece has no pattern number and the letter "v" instead of the letter "u" in Studios denotes this as very early. This pen wipe was made circa 1895-1898.
