For sale is a nice piece of pottery made by the Roseville Pottery Company of Zanesville, Ohio. The shape is a vase and the pattern is known as Florentine I. The vase measures 6 3/16" tall to the top, and is approximately 4 3/8" in diameter at the widest point. The inside opening of the vase is 1 15/16".
Florentine 1 was a very popular pattern in its time, second only to the Donatello line. The pattern depicts panels of soft mottled flowers separated by embossed hanging vines adorned with fruits and leaves. The background glaze is a warm cocoa brown that is highlighted with a deeper chocolate brown in the low relief areas. The cascading leaves are glazed with deep olive green and the fruits are light and dark mauve. The form of this vase is similar to some Grecian forms.
The vase is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no chips, cracks, nicks or dings. There is light overall crazing that does not affect the value and only became visible to me when under bright light. The vase is signed with the Rv blue ink stamp and is known as shape number 229-6" in the Roseville catalog pages. This piece would work well in any arts and crafts, mission or country decor as the matte glaze makes it easy to find a home for.
The vase was made circa 1924-1928.
