For sale is a desk set item made by Tiffany Studios of New York. The item is a small flat desk calendar. The calendar is done in the "Pine Needle" desk set pattern. The patina on the metal is the most desirable green brown with some reddish highlights. The stained glass is the green white Favrile opalescent. The frame measures 4 11/16" wide by 3 1/2" deep and 1 3/16" tall. The calendar window size is 3" wide by 2" tall.
The calendar displays an acid etched Pine Needle overlay pattern on green white opalescent glass. The item is rectangular shaped and all of the glass in the frame is slumped or bent. This means the glass is cut put on a mold, heated and when the glass gets soft enough they press it in the shape made with a tool and then remove from 1 oven and put into another oven to cool or anneal at a gradual declining temperature. The frame still has its clear picture glass and most important is still retains the rectangular shaped clip that holds the glass and calendar pages to the frame from the underside.
The calendar is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, or chips to any of the green Favrile slag stained glass. The clear glass picture window has nibbles and a shallow chip along top left hand edge and is typical of normal age wear. I believe the clear glass to be a later replacement and is unimportant on this particular piece as these were commonly replaced. You can see this only upon close inspection. These items were used and often knocked on the floor and broken. This one is in amazing condition. The patina is extremely nice and uniform throughout.
I also want to point out that this calendar has its complete set of original calendar pages. One of the months pages split in half and was separated. It was clear taped together so you could use it. Usually these frames are missing the pages or have an incomplete set of pages, subsequently it gets used as a picture frame. To acquire this particular Calendar in the Pine Needle pattern with a beautiful patina complete with its original pages is a real treat.
The calendar is signed on the underside top or tall side with the "Tiffany Studios New York" impressed mark along with the pattern number "930" impressed just underneath. There is an "0" over the 3 and it makes it look like an 8 but the correct number is "930" according to the Tiffany Desk Set book by William Holland.
Tiffany started using a 3 digit numbering system after 1902. Since this has a 3 digit number this calendar was made circa 1905-1920. Those of you who are looking for an excellent example of this small calendar in the Pine Needle pattern with brown green patina will be delighted with their purchase!! I'm positive~~~
