The patina on the metal is the most desirable green/ brown with reddish highlights. The stained glass is the green/white Favrile opalescent. The inkwell is the larger size as it stands 3 5/8" tall and is 4 1/8" square. The inkwell displays an acid etched pine needle overlay pattern on leaf green and white opalescent Favrile stained glass. It has an outstanding green/brown/red patina that shows minimal wear. It sits on 4 bun style feet. This is the one of most desirable of the Pine Needle inkwells to collect because of the patina and green glass. The inkwell still retains its original clear glass stepped inkwell insert.
The inkwell is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, or chips to any of the glass. The glass insert is also in very good condition with no issues. The hinge on the to opens and closes with ease. The inkwell is signed on the bottom with the "Tiffany Studios New York" impressed mark along with the pattern number "844" impressed just below. The clear inkwell insert is not signed but it does display a counter sunk polished pontil. Tiffany Studios did not make the inserts to these inkwells as he purchased them from The Davis Company.
Those of you who are looking for an excellent example of this inkwell in the Pine Needle pattern will be delighted with their purchase. Tiffany started numbering his desk set pieces usually with a 3 digit number after 1902. Since this piece has a 3 digit number I would say this inkwell was made circa 1903-1915.
