For sale is a lovely demitasse cup and saucer made by Susie Cooper Production Crown Works of Burslem, England. The pattern is blue "Tyrol" and is just darling. The cup and saucer measure 2 5/8" tall when displayed as a set and is 4 11/16" in diameter. The rim of the cup is 2 5/8" wide. The cup and saucer are decorated with a mustard yellow and blue pattern set on a cream colored background. The exterior of the cup displays 3 rows of hand painted "X"s evenly spaced. The position of the center row is offset to give some interest to this simple design. There is a country blue 3/8" wide band at the bottom third of the cup that completes the exterior pattern. It is further decorated on the interior upper rim with a 3/4" wide mustard yellow band set on a cream background. The saucer has a blue band that encircles the center where the cup rests. It has a wider mustard yellow band that extends to the edge of the saucer and it is decorated again with blue hand painted "X"s over the yellow.. The contrast of the blue on the yellow with the pattern is charming.
Susie Cooper has quite a following and an illustrious history as a potter and designer of ceramics. She started Susie Cooper Crown Works in 1931 until 1966 when Wedgwood took over. She remained there under Wedgwood's tenure until 1979 when the Crown Works factory was shut down. She remained involved as a designer at Adam & Sons who was also part of the Wedgwood group until 1986. Susie Cooper died on July 28, 1995.
The cup and saucer are considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, chips, nicks or dings. There is some crazing on the saucer and cup that is visible on the cream colored background. This little set displays wonderful and it does not detract from the value or appearance.
The cup is signed with the Susie Cooper signature with an underline and "ENGLAND" in block letters underneath. It also has the number 33 hand written in light brown glaze which is most likely the year this cup was made. The saucer is marked with a stamp that reads "A Susie Cooper Production Crown Works Burslem England" with the hand written number 38 which I believe is the year of manufacture. Both of these signatures were used from 1932 to 1964. This little set would make a lovely gift or addition to a teacup collection.
