Hampshire Pottery, Matte Green Side Pour Pitcher, Great Mottled Frothy Glaze~~~

For sale is a wonderful arts and crafts shaped piece of art pottery made by Hampshire Pottery of Keene, NH. The piece is known as a "Side Pour Pitcher". The pitcher is a nice cabinet size as it stands 3 7/8" to the top of the handle and is 5 1/4" wide outside handle measurement and 4 1/4" deep or in diameter at the widest part of the body.

The pitcher displays a bulbous shape with a wonderful ear shaped applied handle. The top has a spout that comes off the top side lip of the vessel instead of the opposite side. This side pour pitcher has a wonderful matte cucumber green glaze that is pretty uniform throughout. There is wonderful mottling and frothiness to the glaze and I consider it one of the best I have ever found on this form.

This side pour pitcher is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, chips or dings. It is signed on the bottom with the incised block lettering "HAMPSHIRE" along with the M in a circle mark. The "M" in a circle mark was used to honor Cadmon Robertson's wife "Emoretta". She was the sister of the founder, James Scollay Taft. Cadmon Robertson was the head chemist for the glazes and ran Hampshire Pottery from 1904-1914. It also also the shape number "60" in raised relief just to the left of the M in a circle mark.

Hampshire Pottery started producing matte glazes in 1891. This was 7 years earlier than their main competitor Grueby Faience of Boston, Mass. Hampshire Pottery resembles the style of Grueby but were much more affordable as they were mold made pieces as opposed to hand thrown. This will make a wonderful addition to any matte green pottery collection of art pottery and would look great on that Stickley, mission, arts and crafts bookcase.

This is such a unique piece by Hampshire Pottery. It will make a wonderful addition to any matte green pottery collection. This piece can be dated based on the "M" in a circle mark. This mark was used by Cadmon Robertson during his tenure with Hampshire Pottery from 1904-1914.
