For sale is a wonderful 2 piece planter or ferner set made by The Van Briggle Pottery Company of Colorado Springs, Colorado. This planter also has a flower frog that has 3 frogs embossed on it and it is original to the piece. The bowl measures 2 7/8" tall and is 8 7/8" in diameter at the belly of the bulge. The inside rim measurement is 6 1/2" and the base measures 5 3/8". The flower frog measures approximately 5" in diameter and is 2 3/8" tall when not placed inside the bowl. The pieces are both made in one of Van Briggle's most highly collected glazes known as "Mulberry".
The planter depicts 4 evenly spaced embossed dragonflies that are facing upwards with open wings. Their elongated bodies or tails create a mock panel between each dragonfly on the lower part of the vessel. The dragonfly wings are accented with the blue purple over spray glaze. The glaze is very thick and deep. The flower frog has 3 embossed figural frogs facing the center of the frog and looking up as if waiting for an insect to fly by. There are 13 holes in this whimsical flower frog. The blue purple accents on the frogs are softly blended into the deep mauve. This is a very nice example of the Mulberry glaze on this particular piece.
The 2 pieces are considered to be in very good to excellent condition as this bowl has no cracks, chips, nicks or dings. The inside of the bowl shows minor wear and the flower frog has some light crazing. The planter is signed on the bottom with the incised Van Briggle Double A logo mark along with "VAN BRIGGLE" in large block letters and "Colo. SPGS." incised underneath it. The flower frog has only the Van Briggle Double A logo mark . This is known as shape number 312 in the Van Briggle catalog. This piece was made circa the late teens to 1920 due to the color of the clay and the signature with "SPGS" in block capital letters.
This is a wonderful hard to find form in any condition. Those of you who collect arts and crafts design pottery will surely welcome this addition into your collection. I am sure it will look just great on that Stickley, mission, arts and crafts bookcase.
