For sale is a wonderful art pottery vase made by Dedham Pottery of Dedham, Ma. This vase has some size as it is approximately 8 1/8" tall and 4 3/4" in diameter The top opening is 3 1/16" outside and 2 1/2" inside diameter. The bottom of the vase measures 3 1/4" in diameter.

The vase has a very pleasing shape. It is similar to a milk bottle shape. It has an extended neck on a high shoulder tapered form. The exterior glaze is just wonderful. I describe this as having a marbleized glaze that shows several different colors and they are tan, brown, blue black, and caramel. Looking inside the vase you can see the grooves in the clay. If you look through the glazes on the exterior you can also see some of he grooves formed from the potters fingers. There is no doubt that this vase is a hand thrown vase.

The bowl is considered to be in very good condition as there are no cracks or major chips. There is few harmless grinding flakes on the underside bottom and an inclusion (extra clay) along the bottom edge. This is factory as made because the inclusion is glazed over. There is also crazing throughout but you have to look real close to see it. The vase is signed with an incised signature that reads "Dedham Pottery, H R) The initials "H R" are for its founder Hugh Robertson. He was also a founding member of Chelsea Keramics Art Works. This vase is considered an experimental glaze.

Dedham Pottery is considered rare Pottery. You do not come across it all that often. Pieces signed by Hugh Robertson are highly collected. If I find 2 or 3 pieces a year that would be a lot. Their pottery is well made and has good weight and density for their forms, this one included. This glaze is very pleasing and I'm quite sure the buyer will be very happy with their purchase. This vase was made circa 1896-1910.
