Zsolnay, Early Hungarian Faience Tankard, Mug, Oriental Design, Birds + Floral~~~

For sale is a very nice piece of art pottery made by the Zsolnay factory in Pecs, Hungary. The form is a tankard or mug and it measures approximately 5 1/4" tall and is 5 1/2" in diameter at its' widest point of the outer handle to the bulge at the bottom of the vessel. The outer measurement of the rim is 3" wide and the base measures 2 11/16" in diameter.

The tankard displays a salmon or coral pink background with an all over floral and Bird of Paradise design. The design appears to have an Asian influence and has a similar look of Cloisonné. There are 6 pairs of decoratively framed Bird of Paradise mates facing each other with stylized flowers in between the pair. There are trailing vines, leaves and tiny flowers both on the inside and on the outside of these frames. Three of the frames are on the upper cylindrical part of the mug and 3 are on the bottom portion where the exaggerated bulge is. Outside of the framed area has smaller flowers and the pattern is just lovely. The entire decoration or pattern is done with a gilt outline as well as the top rim. The applied handle is done in 2 "C" shaped pieces and that also is adorned with the flower and vine decoration.

The tankard or mug is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, chips or dings. There is crazing on the interior of the mug but does not take away from the beauty of this piece. The piece is signed with the Zsolnay Five Church Medallion signature along with the hand done number 16 and a very faint impressed 1581. This dates this piece circa 1878-1879.

This is a wonderful piece of Art Nouveau pottery made by a master potter. The technique of the gilding and decorating of this piece at the bulge of the vessel and on the handle was very tedious work. I'm sure the luck buyer of this piece will not be disappointed.
