Dorflinger,

Sold

For sale is a wonderful set of 5 stemmed cocktails made by The Dorflinger Glass Company of White Mills, Pa. The cocktails were decorated by Honesdale Decorating Company which was a division of Dorflinger. Each cocktail measures approximately 4 1/8" tall and 2 7/8" in diameter. The foot also has a diameter of 2 7/8".

The cocktails each display a round foot with a slender stem and conical cup that is appropriate for brandy, wine and other liquors. They are decorated with an enameled rooster crowing to the arrival of the morning sun on each cocktails. The subject matter is just delightful as I would consider these to be "Cocktail Time". The cocktails are also accented with gold painted rims as well as on the foot. The foot has a the gold trim on the outer edge as well as an inner ring spaced 1/2" towards the stem. The gold adds a bit of elegance to the glasses.

These cocktails are in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks or dings. The stemware is unsigned however they are guaranteed to be original. These cocktail glasses were made circa 1901-1932.

The founder of Dorflinger Glass was one of the giants in the glass field and was recognized for his talents by the tender age of 24. He was born in France in 1828 and became a master at engraving, etching, enameling and gold decorating and was asked to manage the Long Island Flint Glass Works. With a passion for working with glass he established a glass house known as Green Point Flint Glass Works in Brooklyn. At this glass house, his work was so masterful that the glassware sets made for the White House from President Lincoln through President Wilson were made by his company. His glassware was also used for many other wealthy families. His health suffered from the many toxic chemicals in glass making and decorating processes and he moved to White Mills, Pennsylvania. Here he built a glass factory and it became a family business, with his four sons and grandsons also becoming involved in the business. At this time the company was named C. Dorflinger and Sons and continued until 1921. Charles had passed away in1915 and many very talented glass makers worked with Dorflinger over the years. At the height of operations, there were approximately 650 workers at the factories. They had a catalog they also produced called The Honesdale Decorating Company.
