Peters

$895.00

For sale is a splendid arts and crafts style garden ornament made by The Peters and Reed Company of Zanesville, Ohio. The ornament is a Frog that shoots water through its mouth and it is done in a matte green glaze. The Frog has some size to it as 5 1/8" tall and is 5 3/8" wide and 5 1/4" deep.

The garden ornament depicts a 3 dimensional frog sitting with its head pointed up and the mouth open. This frog resembles a tree frog in appearance. It has a wonderful deep matte green glaze that has some brown undertones to it. The detail in the frog is just outstanding as you can see the muscles and bone structure under the glaze in in the sculpture of this piece. The underside has a large round hole for a hose to be inserted so the water can shoot out of the mouth and into a bowl or small garden pond. You can clearly see the red clay that is so typical of the clay that Peters and Reed used. Weller Pottery made a similar frog in the Coppertone pattern and I suspect that Weller copied it because theirs was made after 1920. You commonly see these in Weller but I can honestly say in my 45+ years as a dealer and collector I have never seen one of these from Peters and Reed. The Coppertone one in a similar size sells for $750-$1000. This matte green glaze looks great in the Arts and Crafts decorating scheme. This matte green has a glaze similar to Weller's Bedford Matt Green and somewhat similar to Hampshire Pottery's cucumber matte green glaze.

This garden ornament is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, chips, nicks or dings. The only issues is factory as you can see a small area of a brighter green on the left foot. This green matches the green between the toes and was made this way. I even used acetone to make sure it wasn't a repair and it Was Not. The piece is not signed but based on my research and color of the clay as well as the glaze I am attributing this to have been made by Peters and Reed.

This is a wonderful form and would look just fine in any early matte green art pottery collection. I'm sure it would look just fine on that Stickley bookcase. Peters and Reed were in business from 1897-1919. They were bought out in 1920 by Zanesville Pottery. This garden ornament was made in the early years at Peters and Reed circa 1900-1910.
