For sale is a very letter rack made by Tiffany Studios of New York, New York. The letter rack is done in the "Abalone" pattern in Tiffany Studios fancy goods line. The patina on the metal is the very popular gold with poly chrome highlights. The letter rack has some size to it as it measures 5 7/16” tall, 9 1/2” wide and 2 11/16“ deep. This piece is quite heavy for its size as it weighs 4 lbs 6 ozs. This letter rack displays an incised Art Nouveau pattern along the entire lower front panel with the upper 2 panels showing it at the very top and sides. This Art Nouveau pattern consists of grapes and leaves with real Abalone shell discs being used to represent the grapes. There are 6 clusters of these Abalone set into each panel. These clusters have 7 abalone discs in each one with the whole letter rack having a total of 56 abalone discs. The narrow sides have this same Art Nouveau pattern. The low relief is further accented in a red and green poly chrome, which adds beauty and depth to the piece. This is a rather hard to find desk set item in the Abalone Pattern when it has the poly chrome and is considered by the Abalone desk set collectors to be the best finish to collect in this Tiffany Studios desk set Fancy Goods line. The letter rack is considered to be in very good to excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, or dings to any of the metal. There are some minor staining spots that will probably clean up but I will leave that decision to the new owner. The underside shops typical age wear. The piece still retains all of its original Abalone discs. The letter rack sits nice and even and shows minor patina loss. The letter rack is properly signed on the bottom with the "Tiffany Stvdios New York" impressed mark along with the pattern number "1151" impressed just under it. The "v" in Tiffany Studios denotes this as an earlier signature mark. Tiffany started using a 3 digit numbering system after 1902. Since this has a 4 digit number this letter rack was made circa 1903-1907. Those of you who are looking for an excellent example of this letter rack in the Abalone pattern with gold patina and poly chrome highlights will be delighted with their purchase.
