Weller

$2,495.00

For sale is a very nice piece of art pottery made by The Weller Pottery Company of Zanesville, Ohio. The item is an extremely rare lamp blank from Weller's highly collected and very desirable "Coppertone" line. The lamp blank is rather large as it measures 11 13/16" tall and is 5 1/2" in diameter at the top. It is 5 1/4" in diameter at the bottom.

This lamp blank displays a wonderful trumpet form with a large round foot that has 4 raised relief frog heads poking up. There are several lily pads on long stems that rise up from the bottom section of the trumpet form. They extend all the way to the top lip. There are 8 of these lily pads decorated around the vase. The lamp blank has a wonderful glaze that consists of a mottled matte hunter green glaze with areas of copper mottling. The copper mottles are large and plentiful. There is a factory hole in the bottom designating this item to be made into a lamp. Typically when found you see this form as a vase and they are also considered to be quite rare. I have never seen a factory lamp in this form in my 45+ years as a collector and dealer. I even took a picture if the inside bottom looking inside the vase. You can clearly see the clay is bent over the tool that was used to make the hole when the clay was wet. This area is now hardened and has glaze on the folds.

The lamp blank is considered to be in very good to excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, chips or dings. The lamp blank has some professional restoration on the underside bottom near and around the hole. It is done quite well and hard to see. The lamp blank is signed with Weller's half kiln ink stamp mark. It also has the numbers 12, and 5 along with the letter B written in a green glaze. These are more than likely the artist's numbers and initial that worked on the form.

Those of you who collect Coppertone and are looking to add a very rare addition to their Collection, do not let this one slip by. I have done extensive research on this piece. I have not been able to document this shape as a factory lamp base or blank in any auction or reference book. Those collectors looking to add a rare shape to their Coppertone collection should grab this one as I have never seen one offered for sale anywhere

This lamp blank/vase is an excellent example of the Coppertone glaze. This lamp blank was made during Weller's middle period, circa 1918-1935.
