For sale is a very rare art glass tile made by Tiffany Studios, New York. The tile is a nice petite size that is rectangular in shape and lays flat. The tile measures 3 1/16" wide, 2 1/4" deep and is approximately 3/4" thick at the thickest part. This art glass tile is known as a Turtleback tile with a thin border for wrapping lead came around the edge. The tile is a translucent gold iridescence with nice iridescence on the front side of the tile. It is translucent when held up to the light. There are irregular high and low spots on the front side as well to give some character to this lovely tile that became a very popular motif at Tiffany Studios. The back of the tile is flat and the border has the usual chipping showing the grozing pliers marks. This was done in manufacturing as there were several patties that would have been poured in a mold together. After cooling, they would then cut the tiles into individual tiles and do the finishing beveling work to the edges. Tiffany used similar tiles for his lamps, wall scones, fire places and more as the Turtleback worked well with Arts and Crafts style decor. This particular tile was used in a Tiffany Studios sign in Chicago and is not the more common shape.
The glass is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, chips, nicks or dings. The tile is unsigned as is the case with these style tiles. This tile could also be used as a paperweight. Tiles were some of the earliest glass items made by Tiffany Studios as he used them in his decorating business early on. These were made in his Corona, Long Island glass foundry factory.
This tile was very early in Tiffany Favrile production. This tile was made circa 1892-1900.
