For sale is a wonderful arts and crafts shaped vessel made by The Grueby Pottery Company of Boston, Ma. The vase is a wide mouth vessel that is quite impressive in size. The vase measures 10" tall and is 6 7/8" in diameter at the widest part. The opening is 4 1/8" in diameter at the inner neck of the vessel and 5" at the outer rim where the leaf curls. The base of the vase measures 3 7/8" wide. This vase weighs roughly 4 1/2 lbs before packing.
The vase displays a swollen form that has a wonderful matte cucumber green glaze. It has wide broad leaves that are tooled or modeled very nicely. There are 5 of these that start at the bottom and rise up to the top rim just shy of the top lip. These broad leaves curl out and over at the tip of each leaf. The color is pretty uniform with only 1 broad leaf being lighter in the green glaze and has wonderful mottling. This gives this vase its added character.
The vase is considered to be in very good to excellent condition as there are no cracks, chips or dings. There are a few pin pops in the glaze along the bottom edge and a few locations around the vase. There is also 1 tiny glaze fleck off of a high point on a broad leaf's outer raised edge. I was told there was a professional restoration to bruise on the top side. I can honestly say that it is very hard to see where it is as it was done by an expert restorer.
The vase is signed with the circular impressed mark which reads "GRUEBY . POTTERY . BOSTON . U.S.A." with a Lotus Leaf impressed in the middle. The leaf is very hard to see. It is also signed with the incised letters "RE" for Ruth Erickson. She is one of the most highly collected and important artists that worked for Grueby Pottery. Ruth Erickson's large carved and modeled vases bring a real premium in today's market. This piece was made circa 1904-1909. I'm quite sure the buyer will be very pleased with their purchase. This is truly a wonderful example.
