For sale is a nice piece of arts and crafts art pottery made by The Grueby Pottery Company of Boston, Mass. I have a "Squat Ringed Vase" shaped planter that is done in Grueby's most desired curdled matte green glaze. The vase is a nice cabinet size as 5 5/8" in diameter and 3 3/8" tall. The bottom or the foot has a diameter of 4 1/4".
The vase displays a squat form with a rolled lip and is similar to a volcano shape. The vase displays a wonderful curdled matte green glaze with 2 incised lines that surround the shoulder of the form. The neck rises above these rings to a top lip that rolls over and down. The lip is quite thick. The vase has substantial weight for its size. Looking inside the vase you can see Grueby's brown waterproofing glaze.
The vase is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no major cracks, nicks, or chips. There are some areas of glaze in the neck area where most of the curdling is taking place. There is some thinness to the green glaze in the lower or bottom portion of the vase. The piece is signed with the impressed circular impressed Grueby mark that read "Grueby Pottery Boston U.S.A.". There is also the the letter "Z or N" written in green glaze. I believe this to be the finishers mark.
Of all the art pottery manufacturers of the day, not one single art pottery company had any stronger influence on the Arts and Crafts pottery movement than Grueby. Grueby Pottery has always proven a worthy investment as they do nothing but rise in value year after year. I would say this piece of art pottery was made circa 1906-1909. This piece would look outstanding on that Stickley, Mission, arts and crafts style bookcase. I'm sure the buyer will be extremely happy with their purchase.
