Tiffany

$895.00

For sale is a lovely piece of art glass made by Tiffany Studios, New York. The item is the highly collected and very desirable "Queen" pattern ruffled master salt. The salt is done in Tiffany's highly sought after Blue Favrile style of art glass. This salt is a nice size as it is 4" in diameter and it stands 1 5/16" tall. The bottom has a diameter of 2 7/8".

This master salt displays a ribbed ruffled border that you can clearly see was hand formed and not mold made. The salt has vertical ribbing that rises up from the bottom edge and works it way to the top edge at an angle or in a slight swirl motion. The ribs are very pronounced on the outside of the bowl. There are a total of 10 ribs. The Blue Favrile, Aurene iridescence is just outstanding!! You can see deep beautiful blues with gold iridescence overtones. The inside of the bowl is more brilliant than the outside. On the underside bottom you can see the beautiful brilliant fuchsia iridescence.

This master salt is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, chips or dings. The piece shows virtually no wear on the inside. This master salt is signed on the bottom with Tiffany's counter clockwise etched signature that reads, " 1254 L.C.T. Favrile". The L.C.T. is abbreviated for for Louis Comfort Tiffany. This sits just outside the inverted polished pontil. This is the finishing sign of a quality piece of hand blown art glass. I am assuming that the 1254 number is the number of the piece blown for that year. In the Moise Steeg book on Tiffany Favrile Art Glass he mentions that Tiffany expert Robert Koch states if there is no prefix or suffix letter the piece was made before 1894.

The master salt size is the hardest size to find in the salt and bonbon category. It appears that they were not made in the quantity of the other sizes. I have attached a black and white photo in the early catalog pages from Tiffany Studios. You can clearly see this shape on the bottom row 3rd from far right. It is considered a 4" or master salt size. There were 2 sizes of regular salts in this pattern, 2 3/4" and 3". These were hand blown and varied as much as 1/2" in diameter. This is a very beautiful salt and it is simply amazing that it has survived over 110 years in this condition. I'm sure the buyer will cherish this wonderful piece of art glass in their collection for many years.

I would then have to say this bowl was made in the early 1890's circa 1892-1894.
