For sale is a beautiful vase made by The Rookwood Pottery Company of Cincinnati, Ohio. This vase is done in one of Rookwood's not so commonly found lilac glaze. The vase is a nice cabinet size as it stands 3 7/8" tall and is 3 3/4" at its widest point at shoulder of the vase.
The vase has a squat Grecian urn form with a beautiful lilac purple matte glaze. The vase displays an incised pattern of Water Lily flowers that surround the vase. Above these flowers is an Arts and Crafts pattern that resembles windows with vertical slats. Kind of like jail windows from the mid 1800's. The color and pattern is quite desirable.
The vase is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, chips or dings. The vase is signed with Rookwood's impressed reverse "RP" and sunburst logo along with the Roman numerals "XXIX" for the year of manufacture, 1929. There is also the mold number "2874" impressed under the date.
In my 45+ years as a dealer this is only the second time I have ever had this shape in this color glaze. This is probably the hardest color to come across in the Rookwood production vases. This will make a wonderful addition to any matte art pottery collection and would look just great on that Stickley, Mission, Arts and Crafts style bookcase. Truly an excellent example in both form and color. I'm sure the buyer will be delighted with their purchase.
