For sale is a bronze desk set Item made by Tiffany Studios, New York. The item is called a letter opener and it is done in Tiffany's Studios most sought after acid aged dore' (gold) patinas. This letter opener is part of the highly collected bronze "Abalone" desk set items. The letter opener measures 7 5/8" long, 15/16" wide or deep by 1/4" tall.
This letter opener displays an aged dore' or gold acid etched over silver patina. It has a wonderful version of Tiffany Studios small snowflake acid etched patina. It has a raised relief Art Nouveau pattern that consists of grapes and leaves with real Abalone shell discs being used to represent the grapes. There are 2 clusters of 3 grapes, one on each side of the handle.
This letter opener is considered to be in good condition as you can clearly see patina wear and in some areas the silver under plating is showing through. The knife itself has some dings and dents and is not perfectly straight. It also appears to be a little smaller in length than others tat I have had in the past. The letter opener is signed on the flat side of the handle with an impressed "Tiffany Stvdios New York " mark along with the pattern number 1163 for the Letter Opener pattern number. The spelling of Studio with the letter "V" denotes this as an earlier piece.
Tiffany started using a 3 digit number for his Fancy Desk Set goods after 1902 subsequently this piece was made early circa 1905-1908. This is a hard to find item in the Tiffany Abalone desk set items.
