For sale is a pen made by Tiffany Studios of New York, New York. The pen is done in the "Pine Needle" desk set pattern. The patina on the metal is the most desirable Craftsman Brown with some green at the back end. The Pen measures 7 1/4" long w nib installed. This is the larger size that Tiffany used on his desk sets.
The Pen displays a pattern of Pine Needles. The patina is the highly collected Craftsman Brown patina with some hints of green. Tiffany used this pattern of pens for the Etched Metal, Pine Needle, and Grapevine desk set patterns. The pen is the larger size that fits on the top row of the Tiffany Pen Racks that have holders for 3 pens. He used 2 different sizes this being the larger.
This Pen is considered to be in good condition as there are no major dents or dings to the metal. The pattern and patina shows signs of wear from use down near the nib side where it was held. The back half of the pen the patina and detail is much better. The Pen is one of the hardest items to find in the Tiffany desk set items. These were heavily used items and many of them just did not survive. I'm sure when then were wore down to the gold brass color them simply threw them away. Also, they were never signed. There is no mistake as to who made this as it matches Tiffany's Pine Needle Desk set pattern beautifully. I bought 2 pens with a Pen Rack recently and that Pen Rack was very early. I would say these Pens had been with it from the start. This pen was made circa 1895-1898.
I believe the Pine Needle pattern to have been the first of the Fancy Goods product lines made at Tiffany Studios. Those of you who are looking for a nice example of this Pen in the Pine Needle pattern should be happy with their purchase.
